On each of these 17 days, a maximum of 300 HGVs per hour will be permitted to pass the checkpoint on the Inntal Autobahn near Kufstein North.

According to the regional authorities, the block handling setup for H2 2023 has been devised using a digital simulation model that is being used for the first time.

The software takes into account various factors including historical traffic levels among different things.

The block handling has its fair share of critics, not least haulage associations based in neighbouring countries.

Tyrol Governor Anton Mattle has nonetheless praised the system, claiming it has proven to be an effective method over the past five years. He believes that traffic jams and dangerous situations at the junctions may have been avoided as a result of block handling.

The number of annual block handling dates have risen sharply since 2021, rising from 27 to 41.
