ID Logistics adopts exoskeleton deployment strategy for warehouse workers

Contract logistics provider ID Logistics is set to implement exoskeletons in its warehouses for the first time, unveiling a new tailored approach to their deployment. The new strategy was developed following an in-depth study carried out at two ID Logistics sites in collaboration with EXHOS. It aims to provide precise solutions tailored to the activity, working conditions and individual needs of the employees at each site.

The study, conducted in accordance with the AFNOR X35-800 standard, aimed to develop an effective strategy for integrating exoskeletons into warehouse operations.

Results from the study indicated that the use of exoskeletons can provide tangible benefits when tailored to address specific employee needs and activities within the warehouse, such as load carrying or working in a bent position. While the technology showed promise for certain tasks, such as package gripping, palletizing, and loading, widespread deployment was found to have limitations that outweighed the benefits.

In response to these findings, ID Logistics has opted for a customized approach to exoskeleton deployment, focusing on individual employee needs and the unique requirements of each position. For example, the company is considering orders for exoskeletons specifically for employees experiencing low back pain or lumbar neuralgia. This innovative approach underscores ID Logistics’ commitment to improving working environments and prioritizing the well-being of its employees.

Health and safety remain a top priority for ID Logistics, with the company striving to achieve a 40% reduction in the frequency and severity rate of workplace accidents by 2027 compared to 2018. To achieve this objective, ID Logistics leverages various tools and technologies, including robotics and artificial intelligence, while conducting objective ergonomic audits at approximately twenty sites per year since 2019.

“The partnership between ID Logistics and EXHOS over the past 5 years has enabled us to deploy innovative and concrete actions aimed at improving employees’ working conditions and strengthening the Group’s Disability Policy, said Alicia Guillot, President of the EXHOS Group.

Eric Hémar, Chairman of ID Logistics Group, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to employee well-being, stating,

„The in-depth study conducted with EXHOS shows that the use of exoskeletons can significantly improve the well-being of some of our employees in specific environments, but that their widespread use does not provide a miracle solution to reducing arduousness. We will continue to continuously look for tools and technologies to improve the health and safety of employees, which is one of ID Logistics’ priorities.”
