Belgian haulage association urges companies to accomodate more overnight deliveries

Febetra, one of Belgium's most high-profile haulage associations, wants to see more companies be accepting of overnight deliveries. The association believes more overnight haulage can cut journey times and reduce congestion on the country's roads.

Speaking to national news outlet vrt.be, Febetra said it wants truck drivers to drive at night or outside peak hours as much as possible.

It says the change could reduce congestion on traffic-heavy roads such as the Antwerp Ring.

However, Febetra knows that without the cooperation of companies, a switch to more night driving cannot be made.

Isabelle De Maeght, Febetra representative, told vrt.be:

“The will is there among transport companies, but of course everything depends on the customer. They determine when deliveries have to be made and thus also when the truck drivers have to drive. Febetra itself certainly supports night work, but emphasises that the entire logistics sector must cooperate. Many companies today also do not have the infrastructure that allows night work.”

De Maeght added:

“It cannot be that the drivers arrive at night and have to wait for the customer to open the gate. I do believe it is possible that some customers will be able organize themselves in such a way that trucks can arrive at night, even without the customer’s staff having to be present.”
