Austrian Arlberg tunnel to be closed in both directions for 7 months

A difficult time is approaching for motorists driving through the Austrian regions of Tyrol and Vorarlberg. The nearly 14-kilometre-long Arlberg Tunnel on the S16 expressway will soon be closed for over seven months.

The Arlberg tunnel on the S16 motorway between Tyrol and Vorarlberg will be closed to all traffic in both directions from 15 April to 22 November 2024.

This is due to extensive renovation work on the carriageway, drainage and tunnel surface to improve safety. As a result, the Austrian road authority ASFINAG has set up an online platform that provides comprehensive information on all details of the closure of the Arlberg tunnel (S16 Arlberg motorway) and alternative options.

The diversions will be via the Arlberg Pass (B 197/L 197). ASFINAG also indicates the following routes as alternatives for drivers:

  • via Rosenheim-Munich (Germany),
  • via Gotthard Tunnel (Switzerland),
  • via San Bernardino (Switzerland).
