Catalonia now allows 72-tonne duo-trailers on its roads

The Catalan government has decided to allow the use of duo-trailers, which are vehicle combinations reaching 32 metres in length and weighing up to 72 tonnes. 'This is fantastic news for the industry,' rejoices UNO, the Spanish employers' association for logistics and transport.

As of 1st May, Catalonia’s roads are open to duo-trailers. The Catalan Traffic Authority (Servicio Catalán de Tráfico) has confirmed this and now grants the necessary permits for all vehicles covered under the special transport regime to travel through the region.

The Spanish employers’ organisation in logistics and transport, UNO, welcomed the news, noting that allowing this type of vehicle into service is to enhance the competitiveness of haulage companies and reduce emissions.

“In January of this year, UNO requested that the Ministry of Transport, the DGT (General Directorate of Traffic) and the Catalan government propose a solution to allow duo-trailers to traverse the territory. These are vehicles that require significant investment, and their downtime has negatively impacted the competitiveness of our companies,” the employers’ association assesses.

“UNO awaits the modification of regulations to proceed and permit the movement of these vehicles without the need for special permits,” they point out.

It’s worth noting that, while the DGT allowed duo-trailers to operate throughout the country at the end of 2023, the relevant legislation was still being finalised. Catalonia initially exercised its right to delay the implementation, but duo-trailers are now permitted to operate in the region as well.
